Nothing grounds an international vacation faster than arriving at the departure gate with an invalid travel document. International border authorities hold airlines legally responsible for transporting improperly documented passengers, subjecting carriers to steep fines and deportation costs.
The 6-Month Passport Validity Rule
One of the most common reasons travelers are denied boarding is the Six-Month Passport Rule. More than 70 countries worldwide require that your passport remain valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of departure from their country. Even if your passport is valid for another 4 months, airlines will refuse boarding if the destination country enforces a 6-month buffer.
Blank Visa Pages
Many nations (including South Africa and several Asian countries) mandate that your passport contain at least two completely blank, unstamped visa pages for entry and exit ink stamps. "Endorsement" pages in the back of your passport do not count as visa pages.
Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs)
Visa-free travel increasingly requires pre-travel electronic clearance, including the US ESTA, European ETIAS, Canadian eTA, and UK ETA. These must be applied for online at least 72 hours prior to flight departure.
