Airport ground handlers are the engine room of the aviation industry. Working on active airport ramps in all weather extremes, they coordinate the intensive 30 to 60-minute "aircraft turnaround" interval between landing and the next departure.
Ramp Responsibilities
- Aircraft Marshalling & Chocking: Guiding arriving aircraft into gate stands using illuminated wands or automated visual docking guidance systems (VDGS), followed by securing wheels with heavy rubber chocks.
- Pushback Tug Operations: Driving specialized multi-ton towbar or towbarless tugs to push massive 100-ton airliners backwards out of terminal gates into taxiway lanes.
- Baggage & Cargo Loading: Loading and unloading Unit Load Device (ULD) cargo containers into aircraft bellies while strictly following load balance manifests.
- Ground Support Equipment (GSE): Connecting ground power units (GPU), pre-conditioned air (PCA) hoses, and potable water and lavatory service trucks.
- Aircraft De-Icing: Spraying heated glycol de-icing and anti-icing fluids over wings and control surfaces during sub-freezing winter operations.
